About Elgin Veterinary Hospital

Equine Internship

Our Equine Department specializes in orthopedic surgery, lameness, reproduction, and emergency and critical care. With a caseload consisting predominantly of racing Quarter Horses, interns gain extensive exposure to sports medicine while developing practical skills across all aspects of equine medicine.

Interns receive hands-on training in preventive care, dentistry, nutrition, castrations, reproductive management, internal medicine, and emergency case management. Working closely with experienced senior veterinarians, interns develop clinical judgment, client communication skills, and the confidence to manage cases independently.

Our high-capacity hospital features 88 stalls, a dedicated surgical suite, multiple treatment rooms, a radiology room, and a jogging track, providing a comprehensive learning environment.

On-call responsibilities allow interns to strengthen their clinical decision-making and independence while maintaining access to mentorship and guidance from senior associates. Our goal is for every intern to complete the program prepared to confidently transition into equine general or ambulatory practice.

Bovine Internship

Our Bovine Department combines ambulatory field service with in-hospital medicine and surgery, offering interns a comprehensive experience in bovine practice.

Interns work alongside experienced large animal veterinarians with expertise in herd health, reproduction, lameness, emergency care, and surgical management. Our hospital specializes in bovine lameness, internal medicine, and complex surgical cases, attracting patients from across the country.

Our caseload includes commercial herds and individual bovine patients, with additional exposure to small ruminants. Interns gain experience in herd health consultations, reproductive management, preventive medicine, diagnostics, emergency care, and surgical procedures.

Interns maintain primary case responsibility under the supervision of senior clinicians, participate in daily case assessments and rounds, complete medical records, and contribute to herd-level decision-making.

After-hours emergency responsibilities are shared among interns, with structured time off and ongoing support from experienced veterinarians.

Our goal is to provide the practical skills, clinical judgment, and confidence needed to pursue independent bovine practice or advanced specialty training.
