Equine Intern
Description
Pilchuck Veterinary Hospital offers a one-year rotating equine internship that combines referral hospital medicine and surgery with ambulatory field service. Interns work closely with boarded surgeons, internists, and experienced equine veterinarians who provide direct mentorship in case management, diagnostics, and clinical decision-making.
As the only equine referral hospital in the region with multiple boarded specialists, Pilchuck provides a diverse caseload consisting primarily of equine patients, with occasional small ruminants and camelids. The hospital features two surgical suites with pillow recovery systems, a standing surgery/procedure room, MRI, digital radiology, ultrasound, shockwave therapy, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, regenerative medicine therapies, and a covered lameness evaluation arena. The facility also includes 15 inpatient stalls, ICU stalls, and an isolation unit that can function as a neonatal intensive care area.
Interns have primary case responsibility under the supervision of senior clinicians throughout the year. Responsibilities include daily patient assessments, medical record management, case presentations during rounds, diagnostic procedures, anesthesia, assisting with surgeries and medical procedures, and participation in journal club. While on ambulatory service, interns work alongside veterinarians managing dentistry, lameness evaluations, reproduction, podiatry, and routine field calls.
The on-call schedule is shared among interns and includes referral emergencies managed with senior clinician support. Interns rotate through primary receiving, anesthesia/backup call, and off-call responsibilities. Protected weekday and weekend time off is built into the schedule, and overnight patient monitoring is primarily handled by experienced technical staff, allowing interns to focus on learning and patient care.
Pilchuck's 24/7 technical support team is a key component of the program, providing exceptional patient care while helping interns develop their clinical confidence and skills.
